Protecting Your Skin

Mother nature created a wondrous system when she developed the human skin. It is pliable, strong, self- healing, a manufacturer of essential substances and a defense system against the harmful effects of ultraviolet light. Almost all of us love to spend a day in the sun regardless of where it is --- pool, beach, boat. Exposure to the sun has immediate positive and negative effects on the skin. The positive effects include a sense of warmth, pleasure, tanning and Vitamin D production. The negative effects include sunburn, photosensitive rashes, drug and chemical photo toxicity and allergy reactions, photo-damage, photo-aging and cancer (Basil cell, Squamous cell and/or Melanoma)

Precautions should be taken any time you are going to be exposed to the sun for any length of time. Water resistant quality sun screens which have a SPF rating of 15 to 50 should be applied to babies, children and adults. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing the UV rays and converting the energy into to heat. SPF15 blocks 87.5% UVB and SPF50 blocks 98% if UVB. You should choose the appropriate block.
